According to the NYT, New York City Boss Michael Bloomberg--a corporatist Republican who has convinced many people he's a Liberal--is sending his army of paid campaign workers to pump up the Lieberman campaign in Connecticut:
In his battle for re-election to the United States Senate without the backing of the Democratic Party, Joseph I. Lieberman is deploying a secret weapon in the race's closing days: a sophisticated operation to identify and turn out voters, courtesy of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. The Bloomberg group includes several top-level operatives who played key roles in the mayor's decisive re-election last year or who are in the administration, and have taken leaves from their jobs to work on Mr. Lieberman's campaign.
The New York Times is using a military metaphor to describe the situation--Bloomberg sends his "troops"--but what we are clearly seeing is a mayor who commands autocratic power like a machine politics boss.
Unbeknownst to New Yorkers who actually expect City Hall empolyees to work for the city (strange as it may seem), Boss Bloomberg pounds his desk, barks out a few commands, and bingo-presto: his political machine is suddenly working in Connecticut.
Big Boss Bloomberg.
I suppose, though, that if I were Michael Bloomberg and I had ambition to be boss of America instead of just boss of the big city--I might worry if it seemed that the people of Connecticut had organized themselves too overthrow an ally in New York.
But from a party perspective, here we have yet another high profile Republican coming to the assistance of Joe Lieberman--and not a single response from the Democratic Party. Not a single move to counter this attempt by the Republican Party to use one of their wealthiest candidates to undermine Ned Lamont's senate candidacy.
As it happens, the most powerful person in the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee is also a New Yorker: Chuck Schumer.
Now is the time for Senator Chuck Schumer to stand up and be heard--to stand up and show that a Republican mayor--even a Republican mayor as powerful as Boss Bloomberg--cannot interfere with the will of the people of Connecticut without the Democrat party having something to say about it.
Now is the time for Senator Schumer to stand up and demand that Mayor Bloomberg bring his highly-paid gang home.
